Gucci RTW 2018: moda como herramienta discursiva.

SCROLL DOWN FOR ENGLISH

There’s one thing we can say for sure about the controversial Gucci Ready To Wear runway show: it stands out for something a lot deeper than the creepy fact of seeing a model walking with an exact replica of her head .

This show which was a boom in social media (Instagram more than any other) lead us to think that finally we have runway fashion with social conscience, that represents the changes we’re living nowadays.

The extreme eclecticism of the pieces combined with the fantastic creatures that the models were carrying as pets, makes us feel like we’re witnesses of some sort of scientific experiment. If you add to that ecuation the fact that ambiance was set up as an examination room, you have the whole package.

The first question I asked myself after seeing the show was “Why?”. Every single thing that designers do has a specific reason, everything from the selection of clothes and accessories, the decision of having fantastic animals, to the lightning used in the runway. They analyze every single detail in order to transmit the right arbitrary message, so we receive it in the way they want us to exactly.

In order to understand a complex message, in fashion as in text, we must investigate. After doing some research I was able to read a couple phrases that designer Alessandro Michele said which helped me comprehend the real reason behind such weird collection. Basing it on the Cyborg Manifesto by Donna Haraway, he managed to capture a very specific message on the clothes. “We’re the Dr. Frankenstein of our lives” he said. “I wanted to represent the lab I have in my head. It’s a physical job, like a surgeon”

Today, more than ever, we are the ones who decide who and what we want to be. We take some pieces from here and there,a little bit of that traditcion, a pizca of another way of thinking, and that’s how we create and experiment with the only thing that is truly ours, our life.

Fashion, to be a real social fact, must reflect what’s going on in the society, and that is indeed what Gucci did: fashion.
